WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's cross country season got underway here Saturday morning at Kenilworth Park as the Bison ran in the Howard University Labor Day Classic. The Bison placed fifth out of five teams, mainly Division I programs, as they accumulated 131 team points.
The Catholic University of America won the meet with 32 team points followed by the host Bison from Howard University (50 points), Morgan State University (61) and University of Maryland Eastern Shore (84). Howard sophomore Melanie White won the 5K race, that featured 40 runners, in 20 minutes, 28.61 seconds.
Gallaudet's top runner was sophomore Sierra Pratt (Katy, Texas) who finished 33rd overall with a time of 28:56.66. Junior Taylor Nguyen (Ballwin, Mo.) was close on the heels of Pratt in 34th place (29:14.56). Senior Fatuma Ali (Tucson, Ariz.) finished 37th overall (32:44.57), sophomore Hannah Wetzel (Fremont, Calif.) was 38th (34:08.21) and freshman Jenny Mendis (Brook Park, Ohio) rounded out GU's team scoring in 39th place (34:12.03).

Gallaudet is off next week before it will run at Colmar Manor Community Park in the Cardinal Classic hosted by Catholic on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m.
