WASHINGTON - The Gallaudet University women's volleyball team picked up a much needed win Tuesday night in the Field House as the Bison swept Christendom College, 3-0, in a non-conference match.
Gallaudet (3-13) will take a two-match winning streak into this weekend's Worthington Classic.
The Bison dominated from the start as they made 17 kills in the first set with a .432 attack percentage. Junior Elina Rubinshteyn (Austin, Texas) recorded six of her match-high 15 kills in the first set. Junior Karita Lewis (Frederick, Md.) served up three of her match-high five aces in the first set.
In the second set, Gallaudet's service game was clicking as the Bison served up five aces with two coming from freshman Sunita Schmidjorg (Austin, Texas). GU had another 12 kills and an attack percentage of .333.
In the third and final set, freshman Cassidy Perry (Frederick, Md.) tallied four of her 10 kills. GU matched its first set total of 17 kills (.359 attack percentage).
Gallaudet finished the match with a season best .379 attack percentage and its first straight set win of the season.
Christendom (3-10) was led by Michaela Pennefather's six kills while Fiona Briggs made a team-high 15 digs and Claire Mense passed out nine assists.
- Lewis finished with nine kills, 18 digs, five aces, two assists
- Freshman Demi Bingham (Jefferson, Md.) passed out 37 assists and made 14 digs
- Sophomore Mia Upchurch (Austin, Texas) made 13 digs and four assists
Gallaudet will host the 13th annual Worthington Classic this Friday-Saturday (Sept. 27-28) in the Field House. Eight teams will compete in 16 matches during the two-day tournament. GU will go up against Penn St.-Abington (5-10, 1-1 NEAC) and SUNY Cortland (15-3) at 2 and 8 p.m., respectively, on Friday.
