WASHINGTON - The 2019-20 swimming season got underway here Saturday for the Gallaudet University women's swimming and diving program as the Bison hosted Frostburg State University in the Field House pool.
Gallaudet dropped the season opener, 148-63, to the visiting Bobcats, who won 13 of the 14 events.
Sophomore Anquniece Wheeler (Detroit, Mich.) made her Bison debut and won the 100-yard IM with a time of 1:14.05. Wheeler was second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:24.96) and third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (13:22.32).
Senior Jessica Monroe (Senoia, Ga.) was second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 31.94 followed by freshman Dakota Ronco (San Diego, Calif.) in third place (33.29). Fellow freshman Taylor Garland (Denver, Colo.) was second in the 100-yard backstroke as she touched the wall in 1:26.21.
The Bison had many new swimmers post personal best times in the meet. Junior Alyssa Castillo (Fresno, Calif.) improved her 50-yard butterfly time from 54.77 to 52.46 in the 200-yard medley relay.
- Monroe was third in the 200-yard freestyle (2:34.84)
- Ronco finished third in the 100-yard freestyle (1:18.60) and 50-yard butterfly (43.19)
- Garland placed third in the 50-yard backstroke (38.51)
- Freshman Rebecca Vides (Oahu, Hawaii) finsihed third in the 100-yard butterfly (1:29.00) and 500-yard freestyle (7:50.00)
GU will host Southern Virginia University next Saturday, Oct. 12, at 11 a.m.
