Bison women's team in fifth place after Day 1 of NEAC swimming and diving championships

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University women's swimming and diving team is in fifth place after the first day of competition here Friday night at the 2016 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships being hosted by Cazenovia College.

GU tallied 83 team points and trail defending NEAC champion Cazenovia College (205 points), Wells College (120), SUNY Cobleskill (113) and Cedar Crest College (96) through six events.

In Friday night's final events the Bison had several swimmers participate. Senior Katie Bigelow (Flushing, Mich.) finished seventh in the 500-yard freestyle event with a time of 6:48.84. Sophomore Faye Frez-Albrecht (Canton, Conn.) was seventh in the 200 IM with a new personal record time of 3:32.46. She lowered her personal best time in preliminaries to 3:36.08 from 3:49.52 before taking another three seconds off in the finals.

Junior Naomi Schofield (Syracuse, N.Y.) was fourth in the 1-meter diving event as she tallied 251.95 points in her homecoming to upstate New York.

GU had several relay teams compete on Friday with its top teams finishing fifth in the 200 free relay (2:08.49) and 400 medley relay (5:20.09), respectively. GU's "B" teams finished eighth in the 200 free relay (2:21.39) and ninth in the 400 medley relay (6:05.65).

The Bison return to the Stephen M. Schneeweiss Athletic Complex tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 13) for Day 2 of the 2016 NEAC championships. Preliminaries will start at 10 a.m. and the finals will be held at 6 p.m. The events on display include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 relay.
