CAZENOVIA, N.Y. – The 2012 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) swimming and diving championships got underway Friday evening on the campus of Cazenovia College and the Gallaudet University women’s team, the defending champion, sits in fourth place after Day 1.
The Bison won one of six events and had one second-place finish on the first day of championships as GU tallied 128 team points. The host Wildcats from Cazenovia and Wells College are tied for first place with 150 points. SUNY Cobleskill is third overall with 131 points, just three ahead of the Bison, followed by College of St. Elizabeth in fifth with 66.
Freshman Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) set a new conference and team record in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:19.19. Her time beats the old Bison mark of 2:19.57 held by Stephanie Danner set in 2004.
Freshman Lauren Starkman (Denver, Colo.) placed second in the 1 meter diving competition with 200.40 points. Freshman Tandy Lewis (Frederick, Md.) placed fifth in the 50 freestyle as she touched the wall in 29.07 seconds. The Bison were fourth in the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays.
The teams return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 18) for the second day of three of the 2012 NEAC championships.
