WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women’s swimming team, the defending North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) champions, began its title defense on Saturday in the Bison home opener against conference foe SUNY Cobleskill. The visiting Fighting Tigers won eight of 11 events to clinch the 117-84 victory over the Bison (1-4). The setback is the third straight for Gallaudet on the young season.
Junior Tong Song (Beijing, China) won two events for the Buff and Blue and placed third in another. Song finished first in the 200 yard IM with a time of two minutes and 41 seconds (2:41.91) and touched the wall first in the 200 yard breaststroke (2:57.10). Sophomore Alyssa Gleason (Springfield, Va.) edged Song in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:49.43 to Song’s 2:54.56. Gleason was third in the 200 yard freestyle (2:30.86) and was a member of GU’s 200 yard medley relay that finished second (2:15.59). Gleason was joined by Tandy Lewis (Frederick, Md.), sophomore Valerie Farr (Fremont, Calif.) and Brittany Turner. Lewis won the 50 freestyle for the third win for the Bison.
The Bison will travel to Towson, Md., next Saturday, November 19, to participate in a non-conference double dual meet at 1 p.m. against Arcadia University and the host Gophers from Goucher College.
