WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University women’s swimming team closed out its first half of the 2010-11 season schedule with a solid 73-13 victory over Salem International (W.Va.) University at the Field House pool. The win is the third for the Bison (3-4) this season and the first for the month of December.
The Bison were led by senior Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, Ind.) and sophomore Tong Song (Beijing, China). The pair was part of the first-place 200 medley relay team that won in 2:13.63 and was joined by senior teammates Katie Day (St. Elmo, Ill.) and Misella Tomita (Kahului, Hawaii). Robinson was also part of the first-place 400 freestyle relay along with Day, Alyssa Gleason (Springfield, Va.) and senior Rachel Steingieser (New Market, Md.) that finished in 4:34.64. Robinson also won one individual event in the 50 butterfly as she touched the wall in 29.65 seconds just ahead of Tomita (35.01 seconds). Song won the 200 IM (2:40.40) and the 200 breaststroke. Day won the 100 freestyle in 1:04.95 while Steingieser was first in the 200 freestyle (2:37.68).
Gallaudet won nine of the 11 events as Salem, a Division II program, won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Senior Kayla Castro (Tucson, Ariz.) won the 1,650 freestyle (24:07.10) while junior Amanda Lyndaker (Croghan, N.Y.) took first-place honors in the 500 freestyle (9:26.18).
The swim program is off until the New Year when the Bison will next dive into the pool on Saturday, January 22, in Frederick, Md., against Hood College at 1 p.m. GU will next be at home on Sunday, January 23, against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe College of Saint Elizabeth at 1 p.m.
