Bison women's swim team jumps out ahead after Day 1 of NEAC championships

COBLESKILL, N.Y. – The Gallaudet University women’s swim team had a strong first day Friday at the 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) swimming and diving championships held at the Bouck Hall Natatorium on the campus of SUNY Cobleskill. The Bison won two of the six events and finished second in two other events as GU accumulated 162 team points, sits in first place. Cobleskill is second (130), 32 points behind the Bison, followed by defending champion Cazenovia College (104) in third.

The Bison started out of the gates fast as they finished second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:58.71, just over a second behind the host Fighting Tigers from SUNY Cobleskill (1:57.30). The team of seniors Katie Day (St. Elmo, Ill.), Rachel Steingieser (New Market, Md.), Misella Tomita (Kahului, Hawaii) and freshman Alyssa Gleason (Springfield, Va.) earned 26 team points.

GU added nine team points after the second event, 500-yard freestyle, as senior Kayla Castro (Tucson, Ariz.) placed sixth overall (6:43.12).

Senior Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, Ind.) delivered the first win for the Bison in the third event as she finished first in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:28.48, three seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer. Robinson’s efforts added 16 points to the team total for Gallaudet.

In the fourth event, the Bison finished second and sixth, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Tomita just missed first by two seconds with a time of 28.55 seconds to take second place and 13 points. Fellow senior Day was sixth overall (29.33 seconds, nine points).

The last event the Bison participated in on Friday was the 400-yard medley relay where they won by over eight seconds as Gallaudet’s anchor touched the wall to give them a time of 4:45.08. The first-place relay consisted of Tomita, sophomore Tong Song (Beijing, China), Robinson and Day. GU didn’t have any divers participate in the last Friday night event the 1 meter diving competition.

The second day will begin with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and an evening session containing finals of those day’s events at 6 p.m.
