Bison win first meet of the season

YORK, Pa. - Gallaudet University's first women's swimming win of the season came down to the final two events against Penn State-Altoona on Saturday in York, Pa., as the two teams were tied at 82. Gallaudet split the final two events en route to a thrilling 103-96 victory over the Lions. The Bison also faced Capital Athletic Conference opponent and host York (Pa.) College in the double dual meet but lost to the Spartans, 161-44.

Gallaudet (1-5, 0-4 CAC) flexed its muscle in the second to last event the 100-yard breaststroke. Freshman Tong Song (Beijing, China) won the event against Penn State-Altoona with a time of 1:18.53; she was third overall as two Spartans finished ahead of her. Fellow freshman Sara Moore (Charleston, W.Va.) was close behind as she clocked in at 1:21.51. Senior Rachel Steingieser (New Market, Md.) added great depth as she picked up some key points with a time of 1:27.28. GU outscored the Lions 15-3 in that event to clinch the win.

The final event was the 200-yard freestyle relay where the Bison team of sophomore Danielle Koplitz (Eau Claire, Wis.), freshman Randi Medugno, sophomore Raven Slevin (Green Valley, Ill.), freshman Cassandra Jones-Bell (Tucson, Ariz.) finished behind the Lions along with a second Bison relay team of freshmen Maggie Hoyt (Norway, Maine), Smentijiana Farnum (East Lansing, Mich.), Kaityln Taylor and Sonam Jain to give the Bison six points to preserve the win.

"What is most amazing about today's win is that every one of our 16 swimmers scored at least one point.  We could not have won today without everyone. This victory is all about true teamwork," said Gallaudet coach Bill Snape.

Junior Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, Ind.) won the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:23.65. She finished third overall in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:06.56 but was first in that event against the Lions.  Sophomore Katie Johnson won the 1,000-yard freestyle event against the Lions with a time of 14:15.34.

Gallaudet is now off to the New Year when the Bison will next travel to Virginia to face Hollins University and Salem College on Saturday, January 16, in a double dual meet.
