WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University was down to its last out in the second game of a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) softball doubleheader on a sun-filled Saturday afternoon against Cazenovia College. The visiting Wildcats were about to sweep the Bison before two costly mistakes allowed the Bison to score twice to win 5-4 in walk-off fashion to salvage a split. Cazenovia (5-7, 1-1 NEAC) won the first game 4-2 over the Bison (7-11, 1-5 NEAC).
GU wore special pink jerseys as the Bison participated in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) StrikeOut Cancer - Pink Game. The annual tradition for the program gave fans an opportunity to show their support for cancer survivors by wearing pink or making a donation to cancer research. Karen Smith, a cancer survivor, threw out the first pitch at the start of the game.
Game 1: Cazenovia 4, Gallaudet 2
GU held a brief 2-1 lead after the first inning but the Wildcats continued to score runs through the first three innings and led 4-2 after three.
That was all starting pitcher McKenzie Harris (2-1) would need as she threw a complete game where she allowed two unearned runs on four hits, walked one and struck out five.
GU scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a double steal, which was aided by a throwing error by the Wildcats' catcher.
Senior pitcher Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.) took the loss as she allowed four runs on six hits, walked two and struck out three.
Game 2: Gallaudet 5, Cazenovia 4
The Bison scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first and later led 2-1 and 3-2 before each team scored twice in the seventh.
The Wildcats had ample chances to take the lead throughout the game as they left the bases loaded four times and stranded 17 runners on base in the game.
Cazenovia finally took the lead after GU walked in a run, with the bases loaded, and a passed ball allowed the Wildcats' fourth run to score as the visitors led 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Wildcats struck out a batter, walked one and got a quick second out on a sacrifice bunt. The game looked to end on the next batter when an infield pop-up was dropped by the catcher. Zacarias stepped to the plate with runners at the corners. A stolen base by the runner on first placed the game-winning run two bases away. Zacarias lifted a fly ball to centerfield where it was dropped as freshman Alexandra Monge (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) scored from third base and Hailey Henshaw (Newark, Del.) raced home from second base to end the game.
Zacarias (4-6) picked up the win in the circle as she threw her second complete game on the day. She allowed four runs (two earned) on 12 hits, eight walks and one strikeout.
Abigail House (0-5) took the loss for the Wildcats as she pitched the final three innings and allowed three unearned runs on one hit, one walk and struck out two.
Gallaudet will play host to Wells College (1-11, 0-4 NEAC) in a conference doubleheader tomorrow (Sunday, April 7) at 11 a.m. In between the doubleheader the Bison will recognize its senior class on Senior Day.
