TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The Gallaudet softball team and Washington Adventist University played a non-conference doubleheader under the lights here Tuesday evening.
The Bison (11-12) swept the Shock (6-4) 13-9 and 11-8 in a lengthy night on the WAU soccer field.
Game 1: Gallaudet 13, Washington Adventist 9
Gallaudet broke out the bats in the first game as the Bison hit three home runs, after entering the game with only one home run to the team's credit. The Bison jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and scored runs in every inning but the second as they collected 14 hits, nine of which were extra-base hits.
WAU trailed 9-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth where the Shock scored once and they added five runs in the sixth and one more run in the seventh.
The Bison had a total 14 hits led by junior pitcher/second baseman Jacklyn Zacarias (Montebello, Calif.), senior third baseman Genesis Rodriguez (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman pitcher Hannah Carter (Dayton, Ohio) with three each. Carter and Rodriguez doubled twice and added a single to complete their three-hit game. GU had six doubles in the four-run win.
Gallaudet took advantage of the short field, 170 feet down the line, and smashed three home runs. Senior outfielder Kelsey Hudson (Blissfield, Mich.) and freshman shortstop Hannah Neild (Litchfield, N.H.) hit home runs in the fourth while Zacarias hit her first home run in a Bison uniform in the sixth.
Zacarias (3-6) picked up the win in the circle as she struck out five batters in four innings of work.
Washington Adventist pitcher Aaliyah Stone took the loss as she issued five walks, eight hits, eight runs, and stuck out four in four innings.
Game 2: Gallaudet 11, Washington Adventist 8
Gallaudet posted a second-straight 14-hit game as the Bison swept a season series for the fourth time this year. The Bison scored first and put the game away in the seventh to break open an 8-8 tie en route to the 11-8 win.
Gallaudet led 7-3 before Washington Adventist scored five times in the bottom of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead. GU scored a run in the sixth to knot the game at 8-8 before scoring three times in the top of the seventh.
Neild doubled home senior Alyssa Barlow (Chandler, Ariz.) for the eventual game-winning run. Zacarias followed with a two-run home run off Washington Adventist starting pitcher Aliyah Stone.
Barlow led all hitters with her 4-for-5 performance at the plate while Neild picked up three doubles.
Bison pitcher Hannah Carter (Dayton Ohio) picked-up her fourth win as she allowed eight runs (one earned) on nine hits, three walks and eight strikeouts.
GU's softball team will travel to Pennsylvania for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader against Penn St.-Abington tomorrow (Wednesday, April 11) at 3 p.m.
