Gallaudet stung by Hornets on the road, 74-60

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team lost to Shenandoah University, 74-60, on the road here on Sunday evening in a non-conference game.

Gallaudet (0-7) led several times in the first half as its biggest lead reached six points, 18-12, at the 13:21 mark. The Bison later regained the lead, 22-21, on a Steve Valencia-Biskupiak (Riverside, Calif.) basket with 8:31 left before the break. Shenandoah (3-2) took over from there and went on a 21-9 run to take a 42-31 lead into intermission.

In the second half, GU was able to climb back into the game and cut the margin down to three, on several occasions, but couldn't regain the lead. The Hornets pulled away at the end by making their free throws. 

Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) led the Bison with 16 points and five rebounds while his uncle, Valencia-Biskupiak, finished with 13 points, five boards, three assists, three steals and two blocks. Sophomore guard Corey Smith (Miami, Fla.) was the third Gallaudet player in double figures with 10 points and eight rebounds off the bench.

Shenandoah was led by four players in double figures. Guard Christopher Chaney led the way with 21 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

  • Junior Shawn Daniels (Lakeland, Fla.) scored eight points
  • Gallaudet scored 22 points in the paint and 20 fast break points
  • SU led for nearly 33 minutes
  • Gallaudet's last field goal came at the 2:41 mark in the second half

Gallaudet will begin conference play next weekend on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Cazenovia College at 1 p.m.
