GU turns it over to Baruch in second half, lose 80-76

NEW YORK - The press defense got to Gallaudet University here Saturday as it dropped an 80-76 decision to Baruch College in a non-conference men's basketball game at the ARC Arena.

Gallaudet (0-5) led by seven points, 47-40, at the 13:50 mark in the second half before Baruch (3-1) went on a 12-0 run to take the lead for good.

The Bison turned the ball over 15 times in the second half with 10 of those turnovers coming in the final 13 minutes. Baruch scored 26 points off those 15 second-half turnovers. Baruch outscored GU, 48-41, in the second half as 54 percent of the Bearcats' points were scored off Bison turnovers.

Overall, Gallaudet coughed up the ball 24 times to Baruch, who scored 38 points off those turnovers.

Senior guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the second half as he made 4 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Junior guard Preston Kelly (Fishers, Ind.) netted 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists in the loss. Sophomore forward Matt Sherman (Angora, Minn.) was the third Bison in double-digits with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Baruch (3-1) had five players in double figures led by guard Adnan Bajrami's 16-point game, eight rebounds, three assists and one steal.

The two teams went back and forth in the first half as the game was tied four times and saw six lead changes. Gallaudet outscored Baruch, 12-3, over the final five minutes to take a 35-32 lead into halftime.
