WASHINGTON – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department has announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Services (Somerset, N.J.) for February. Men’s basketball freshman forward Joshua McGriff (Riverside, Calif.) and women’s swimming and diving junior Anna Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) were selected for their exceptional performances as Bison student-athletes.
McGriff was selected to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) third team and was also named the NEAC Rookie of the Year. McGriff played two of his best games in the final stretch of the season, achieving two double-doubles with 28 points, 14 rebounds and 24 points, 10 rebounds. He scored in double digits in 20 different games, reaching 20-plus points four times. McGriff finished the season with 326 points, 167 rebounds, 51 blocks, 13 assists and 11 steals. He ranked second in field goal percentage (57.6), blocks (51) and points per 40 minutes (23.5). McGriff is ranked 37th in Division III for blocked shots per game (2.22).
Polivanchuk helped to lead the Bison to a third-place finish at the NEAC championships on Feb. 14-16 in Cazenovia, N.Y. She earned six All-NEAC first team honors and a second team honor at the conference championship. In the process, she broke five individual school records, two individual NEAC championship records and was a member of four relay teams that set new NEAC championship and Gallaudet school records. In the ECAC swimming championships, Pollvanchuk lowered her school record time in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.38 to place 23rd overall.
These are the sixth Bison of the Month awards for the 2013-14 athletics seasons. Each month the Gallaudet University Athletics Department will recognize two standout student-athletes (one male, one female) from their respective sports. Previous winners include men’s basketball senior forward Orion Palmer (Riverside, Calif.) and women’s basketball senior guard Stephanie Weiss (Wellington, Fla.) for the month of January. Senior men’s swimmer DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) and women’s basketball senior forward Lindsay Stergio (Montville, Conn.) for the month of December. Football sophomore running back BJ Flores (Raymondville, Texas) and junior swimmer Alexandra Polivanchuk (Orebro, Sweden) for the month of November. Football junior defensive lineman Tyler Snider (Thornville, Ohio) and soccer senior defender Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.) for the month of October. Football senior defensive back Nicholas Elstad (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and women’s volleyball senior outside hitter Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) were the September Bison of the Month.
