WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a highly contested women's volleyball match Gallaudet University was able to rally from down one set to defeat University of Mary Washington 3-1 on Thursday night before a spirited Homecoming weekend crowd of 600 at the Field House. The win increases Gallaudet's win streak to 12 matches as the Bison (24-6) won 24-26, 29-27, 25-21, 25-23 over the Eagles, a former Capital Athletic Conference rival.
Freshman Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) led the charge with 17 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Senior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) put together a complete performance in her final home match as she tallied nine kills, five digs, three service aces and three block assists. Freshman setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) passed out 36 assists, made seven digs and three blocks while junior Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) led the team with 13 digs and three service aces. Junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) made seven blocks (one solo) to go with six kills. Fellow junior Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) knocked down eight kills, six digs and two blocks.
Mary Washington (15-12) was led by Tola Adebanjo's 12 kills and 12 digs in the loss. Kaitlynn Wickersham and Ellen Smethurst added 11 kills each while Wichersham made 19 digs to record the double-double.
This was the final home game for the Bison but GU still has three more games on the road to closeout the regular-season. The Buff and Blue will next make the short trip over to Catholic University of America on Wednesday, October 26, for a 7 p.m. non-conference match with the Cardinals.
