Bison volleyball team sweeps up at Battlefield Classic
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – It was a clean sweep for the Gallaudet University women's volleyball team at the Battlefield Classic on the campus of Gettysburg College this weekend as the Bison posted a perfect 4-0 record and didn't drop a set.
Gallaudet (4-0) started the two-day tournament on Friday evening with 3-0 wins over Mt. St. Vincent (25-5, 26-24, 25-7) and Rutgers-Camden (25-17, 25-17, 25-14). The Bison followed that with 3-0 shutouts against McDaniel (25-6, 25-6, 25-9) and Penn St.-Altoona (25-21, 25-20, 25-16) on Saturday.
GU freshman Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) was selected to the all-tournament team as she compiled 23 kills (.308 attack percentage) to go with 25 digs, eight service aces and 14 blocks over the course of four matches. Junior outside hitter Ann Whited (Fishers, Ind.) led the Bison with 28 kills and 20 digs while junior middle hitter Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) made a team best 20 blocks and junior outside hitter Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) served up a team-high 15 service aces in the four matches.
Freshman setter Sarah Tubert (Burbank, Calif.) had a nice debut as she passed out 93 assists, made 18 digs and 11 blocks and knocked home 11 kills. Senior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) adjusted to her new outside hitter position and tallied 12 kills, 28 digs and eight service aces. Juniors Lauren Benedict (Germantown, Md.) and Krystal Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) saw action in every match and set this weekend.
The Bison will travel to Seguin, Texas, next week when it participate in the Bulldog Classic hosted by Texas Lutheran. GU will start the tournament against Linfield on Friday, September 9.
