Gallaudet hangs tough against No. 6 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – It was a stern task for the Gallaudet University volleyball team on Wednesday night when the Bison took the court at the Freeman Center against No. 6 Christopher Newport University. The nationally ranked Captains (30-2) entered with a perfect record at home and only two losses this season, against two top six teams. The young Bison squad battled in the second and third sets but fell 25-11, 25-21, 25-23.

Gallaudet (21-13) pulled to with three in the second set, 23-20, but couldn't tie the set. The Bison controlled the third set where they led from the third point until the 18th point. CNU came back and tied the set at 18-18 and the two teams were neck-and-neck until the end. Sophomore Mari Klassen (White Rock, British Columbia) recorded her ninth kill in the match to pull GU to within one, 24-23. The Bison could not hold serve as the Captains got the kill to end the set and match.

Junior setter Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas), the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week, finished with 18 assists, five digs and four kills. Junior libero Micaela Paulone (Fishers, Ind.) had a team-high 11 digs and three service aces.

The Bison return home to close out their regular-season schedule on Friday, October 29, for two non-conference matches against Rowan University and Stevenson University on Homecoming weekend. GU will play at 4 and 8 p.m.
