Tamijo Foronda selected as 2006-07 CAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year

The Capital Athletic Conference announced its end-of-year
awards, the Male and Female Scholar Athlete Awards as well as the
Unsung Hero Award.
In order to receive this honor, each candidate is nominated
by coaches, athletic and sports information directors of each
member institution. Member institutions may not vote for their own
student-athlete; each athletics and sports information director
participate in the review of all nominations and subsequent
voting.
The criteria for Male and Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award
is as follows:
- The student-athlete must be at least a sophomore;
- The nominee must have demonstrated athletic success and must have been a major contributor to the program;
- The nominee must have a minimum of a 3.20 cumulative GPA.
After final tallies, Senior Tamara “Tamijo” Foronda
(volleyball) was selected as the 2007 Female Scholar-Athlete of the
Year. Foronda maintained a 3.93 GPA as a Physical Education major,
while setting individual volleyball records and amassing a
career-best 2,042 kills.
In the classroom, Tamijo has been on the Dean’s List since
enrolling in 2002, a member of the Phi Alpha Pi Honor Society, a
three-year recipient of the President’s Scholar Award, and a
member of the CAC All-Academic team since 2003.
On the court, Foronda earned nationwide ranking with a 5.89
kill-per-game average amongst D-III volleyball players. She ranked
1st nationally in this category as well as in the CAC for 2006,
with a 5.7 average. In addition, this average set a new Gallaudet
record. She also was the CAC Player of the Week, CAC Player of the
Week Honorable Mention, and earned several All-Tournament team
honors, in addition to the American Volleyball Coaching
Association’s National Player of the Week. For more

The Male Scholar Athlete of the Year was awarded in a tie to
Justin Baker (Mary Washington) and Chris Brower (York College),
while the Unsung Hero Award went to DJ Tayman (Marymount).
