NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Gallaudet University women's track and field team took part in the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport University, on April 14-15.
In the track events, sophomore Karina Mitchell (Las Cruces, N.M,) and seniors Shellane McKitty (Yonkers, N.Y,) and Ivy Sahneyah (First Mesa, Ariz.) were the top finishers for Gallaudet during the two-day meet.
Mitchell competed in the 100-meter hurdles and finished in sixth place, as she crossed the finish line in 21.43 seconds.
McKitty's top finish came in the 400-meter dash when she placed ninth overall with a time of 1:01.31. McKitty also finished 17th in the 100-meter dash (13.44) and 18th in the 200-meter dash (27.03).
Sahneyah took 10th place in the 3,000-meter run as she finished in 16:39.83.
Sophomore Saria Webb (Duncanville, Texas) was the top finisher for the Bison in the field events. Webb's top finish came during her final throw in the shot put when she threw for 8.53 meters (28 feet).
- Junior Abby Courtemanche (Southbridge, Mass.) placed 13th overall in the hammer throw when she threw for 24.9 meters (81 feet, eight inches)
- Courtemanche was 16th in the shot put with a top toss of 6.66 meters (21 feet, 10.25 inches)
- Junior Paulette Melendez (Davenport, Fla.) placed 29th in the 100-meter dash (16.08)
- Mitchell placed 45th in the 200-meter dash (32.73)
The Bison will travel to Durham, N.C., to compete in the Atlantic Independent Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Methodist University on Thursday, April 20.
