TOWSON, Md. – The Gallaudet University women’s track and field team finished fifth out of five teams at the Goucher Classic hosted at Gopher Stadium in Towson, Md., on Saturday. The Bison competed in just over a third of the events (8-of-21) offered as the meet featured two Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) foes and two former CAC members.
York (Pa.) College ran away with first place as the Spartans accumulated 203 team points followed by Catholic University of America (152.50 points) and the host Gophers from Goucher College (111). Hood College took fourth place with 98.50 points while Gallaudet tallied 34 points.
Three Bison freshmen earned all of the team points for Gallaudet. Thrower Jessica Israel (Frederick, Md.) led the way with 18 points as she placed third in the javelin (29.45 meters), shot put (10.30 meters) and discus (26.26 meters) and was seventh in the hammer throw (25.81 meters). Fellow thrower Rian Norris (Cincinnati, Ohio) chipped in two points as she finished sixth overall in the hammer throw (25.85 meters) and shot put (8.78 meters) to earn a point in each. Hurdler Kayla Hardaway (Austin, Texas) was second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.82 seconds) and third in the 400-meter hurdles (1:18.93) as she contributed 14 points.
Sophomore Rosemary Johnson (Richardson, Texas) ran in the 100-meter dash preliminaries but did not qualify for the finals in the event as she clocked in with a time of 15.46 seconds.
GU is off for two weeks before the Bison compete at the Lynchburg College Track and Field Classic on Saturday, April 10, in the final tune-up before the CAC championships a week later.
