Gallaudet Swimmers March On

On the first weekend in December, as the weather turned from autumn to winter along the Eastern Seaboard, the Gallaudet University Men and Women’s Swim Team traveled to Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia for a two-day competition (December 1st and 2nd). The Gallaudet women took ninth place out of twelve teams. For the first time in years, the women are now competitive in all strokes and distances.
"Although some early swims looked like they were drowning in turkey and stuffing, we started to swim well as a team by the end of the first day of competition, and ended the second day on a very positive note," noted Head Coach Bill Snape. "This meet is good experience for the three-day Capital Athletic Conference Championship in February and reminds us how important good training will be over the next month," he continued.
Four women scored individually for Gallaudet: junior Kandace Morris (100 Fly, 200 Fly), senior Jessica Mikolay (100 Fly, 200 Fly), sophomore Angela Cassinelli (500 Free) and senior Julia Velasquez (1650 Free).
Also scoring for the Aqua Bison were Jodi Winkelmann, Jen Talbot, and Silvia Herdicka. The best relay performance of the weekend was perhaps the women’s 200 Free Relay (1:53.71), off the team record of 1:51.91. Others with personal bests included: Susanna Krige, Marissa Larson, Shannon Swank and Kerrie Peterson (some in relay splits).
After the Winter Holiday break, the swim team convenes back on
Kendall Green on January 3rd for training. The first meet of 2007
is at Hollins University against Hollins (women), Salem (women) on
Friday January 12th. The last home meet of the season is Sunday
January 14th against the College of Notre Dame at 1pm, Field House
Pool. Come check out and support your high-flying Gallaudet Swim
