Gallaudet softball no-hits Trinity club team twice in one day

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University softball team overmatched the Trinity (D.C.) University club team on a wet and cool Saturday at the GU Softball Complex, which handled the rain well due to the new turf field, as the Bison won 18-0, 10-0 in five innings. GU did not surrender one hit to the Tigers, who were making their 2012 season debut, as the Bison no-hit Trinity in both games.

Freshman pitcher Montana Murphy (Simi Valley, Calif.) threw a perfect game as she pitched five innings and struck out six batters in the 18-0 win in the first game. Sophomore Rachel Sweigart (Big Rock, Ill.) threw a no-hitter in the second game as she threw five innings, walked three and struck out nine batters to complete the back-to-back no-hit sweep.

Trinity committed eight errors in the first game as its pitchers combined to walk 11 and hit two batters as GU had nine hits in the 18-run win. Sophomore Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) and senior Easter Faafiti (Pittsburg, Calif.) scored four runs each while junior Alicia Johnson (San Jose, Calif.) drove in five runners. The first game lasted over two hours, including a 20-minute rain delay, and with more rain in the forecast for the afternoon the Bison base runners left the base early four times to get called out.

In the second game, Sweigart struck out the first batter and then promptly hit the next two batters before getting out of the inning without giving up a run. Gallaudet scored 10 runs in the second inning on four hits, highlighted by an inside-the-park home run by Murphy to score the game's first three runs. The first two innings took one hour to play as the Bison had to force their base runners to leave the base early again to get out as this happened five times. GU had seven hits while Trinity committed four errors in the field.

Trinity, a NCAA Division III school, is offering softball at the club level this year and thus the statistics and results from today's games are not officially recognized by the NCAA.

Gallaudet will next host Valley Forge Christian College on Monday, March 26, at 3 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
