GU sprinters look strong early on during indoor season

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's indoor track and field team competed against 17 teams here Saturday at the Orange & Maroon Classic hosted by Susquehanna University.

Freshman Nick Jones (Fulton, Mo.), junior Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) and junior Gunner Hahn nearly qualified for the finals in their respective events. Jones and Roberts competed in the 60-meter dash. Jones finished second in his heat with a time of 7.35 seconds, just one tenth of a second shy of a spot in the finals. Roberts finished third in his heat with a time of 7.75 seconds, just five tenths of second shy of a spot in the finals.

Hahn raced in the 60-meter hurdles event and placed fourth in his heat as he crossed the finish line in 9.57 seconds. His time was just two tenths of a second behind the pace to qualify for finals. 

Jones also participated in the 200- and 400-meter dash where he finished 10th (24.02) and 13th (54.89), respectively. In the 400 he won his heat by nearly two seconds.

Sophomore Toraneau Varice (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) ran his way into the top 10 in the 200-meter dash as he finished in eighth place with a time of 23.85 seconds. His time earned him a third-place finish in his heat.

BISON TRACKS

  • GU's 4x200-meter relay team, made up of Roberts, Jones, Varice and freshman Kai Christenberry (Birmingham, Ala.), placed seventh out of 15 teams
  • Christenberry placed 39th overall in the 400-meter dash (58.58)
  • Senior John Isaacson (Clive, Iowa) placed 30th in the 800-meter run as he crossed the finish line in 2:11.03

Gallaudet will take the week off before they head to Newport News, Va., on Saturday, Feb. 4, to participate in the Vince Brown Invitational.
