GU men place 14th at Morgan State Legacy Track Meet

BALTIMORE - The Gallaudet University men's track and field team spent the past two days here competing at the Morgan State Legacy Meet hosted by Morgan State University. The Bison finished tied for 14th place with 10 team points with Essex Community College. Rowan University won the meet with 151.50 points followed by the host Bears (126) and Norfolk State (97) round out the top three spots.

Competing against a strong field of 19 runners, freshman Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden) came in first in the men's 5,000-meter run event with a time of 15 minutes and 54.77 seconds which was more than 15 seconds faster than the second-place runner.

Junior John Isaacson (Clive, Iowa) finished 29th out of 35 participants in the 400-meter hurdles event with a time of 1:00.37. Sophomore Shawn Benavente (Phoenix, Ariz.) participated in the 400-meter dash, finishing with a time of 53.50 seconds, which was good for 41st place out of 54 runners. He also placed 54 out of 57 runners in the 200-meter dash (23.93 seconds) while teammate Toraneau Varice (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) was 35th (22.70 seconds). 

The 4x100 meter relay team of sophomore Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas), Varice, senior Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Benavente finished 9th out of 11 teams with a time of 44.82 seconds.

Junior Joshua Branscomb (Memphis, Tenn.) finished 53rd in the 400-meter dash (1:01.28) and was 48th in the 1,500-meter event (5:22.41). 

BISON TRACKS

  • Freshman Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) was 13th in the discus throw (33.70 meters)
  • Sophomore Naod Getachew (Somerville, Mass.) was 20th in the discus throw (21.17 meters) 
  • Sophomore Dane Pelz (Oregon, Ohio) had a hammer throw of 21.35 meters, good for 10th place
  • Junior Rodney Lebon (Charlotte, N.C.) finished 49th in the 1,500-meter run (5:54.28)

UP NEXT
Gallaudet will return home to host the Bison Invitational at Thomas O. Berg Track on Saturday, April 30 beginning at 9:30 a.m. This also marks senior day as the program will recognize five male and five female student-athletes on the GU track and field teams.
