NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Gallaudet University men's track and field team spent the past two days here competing in the New Captains Classic hosted by Christopher Newport University. No team scores were kept for the NCAA Division III teams in competition but personal records and a new school record was posted by the Bison.
Freshman Otto Kingstedt (Stockholm, Sweden) set his second school mark for outdoor track as he won the 3,000-meter run with a time of nine minutes, 1.37 seconds. Kingstedt broke a three-year old school record of 9:45.84 set by Ivan Alfaro on March 30, 2013 at the Goucher Invitational.
Kingstedt also finished first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:38.15. The Sweden native set the Gallaudet school record in that event last month with a time of 15:15.31.
Sophomore Toraneau Varice (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) finished ninth out of 28 in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.46 seconds. He also came in 16th place out of 40 in the 200-meter dash (23.19 seconds). He was a part of two relay teams, the third-place 4x100-meter relay team (44.64 seconds) and the sixth-place 4x400-meter relay team (3:30.05).
Junior John Isaacson (Clive, Iowa) finished in 10th place in the 110-meter hurdles (18.68 seconds) and ninth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:00.15). Issacson also threw 27.19 meters (89 feet, two inches) in the javelin and was part of the 4x400-meter relay.
Senior Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) crossed the finish line in 51.86 seconds in the 400-meter dash in 11th place and was a part of both relay teams.
- Freshman Vicente Perez (Cicero, Ill.) was 5th in the 3,000-meter run (10:18.12) and 20th in the 5,000-meter event (17:12.47)
- Sophomore Montray Roberts (Dallas, Texas) was 21st in the 100-meter dash (11.96), 32nd in the 200-meter dash (24.39) and 11th in the long jump (5.50 meters)
- Freshman Jamal Garner (Jacksonville, Ill.) finished 9th in the high-jump (1.78 meters), 16th in the shot-put (12.14 meters) and 19th in the discus throw (34.90 meters)
- Sophomore Shawn Benavente (Phoenix, Ariz.) was 30th in the 200-meter dash (24.29 seconds), 20th in the 400-meter dash (53.16 seconds) and also participated in both relays
Gallaudet will next travel north to Baltimore to participate in the two-day Morgan State Legacy Meet next Friday and Saturday (April 22-23).
