GRANTHAM, Pa. – A picture perfect day for a track and field meet took place Saturday here at the Messiah College Invitational and many personal records were set by the Gallaudet University men’s and women’s teams.
Sophomore Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) paced the men’s team as he set personal records in his two events. He finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.18, just two seconds behind first-place Jonphilip McGill from Messiah. Close took 18th place in the 1,500-meter run (4:26.68) as he took 12 seconds off his seed time. Sophomore Brian Llanes (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Joshua Branscomb (Memphis, Tenn.) both set personal best times in the same two events.
Freshman John Isaacson (Clive, Iowa) had a Top 10 finish in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.77) as he shaved four seconds off his previous best time. Senior Shelby Bean (Arvada, Colo.) and sophomore Todd Collins (East Islip, N.Y.) led GU in the men’s throwing events. Bean placed 10th in the hammer with a throw of 110 feet, two inches (33.57 meters) and 22nd in the shot put with a toss of 35 feet, 3.75 inches (10.76 meters). Collins placed 15th in the hammer with a toss of 92 feet, one inch (28.06 meters) and was just edged by Bean in the shot put as he placed 23rd (35 feet, three inches – 10.74 meters).
On the women’s side, it was the Gallaudet field participants that made big strides and set more personal marks. Sophomore Kaneesha Stallworth (Talladega, Ala.) set new personal records in the hammer and shot put. She placed 11th overall in the shot put with a toss of 28 feet, 9.75 inches (8.78 meters) and was 14th in the hammer with a throw of 76 feet, 10 inches (23.41 meters). Bianca Hardin and sophomore LaQuita Carroll (Spanish Fort, Ala.) finished 11th and 14th, respectively, in the long jump. Hardin cleared 14 feet, 6.5 inches (4.43 meters) while Carroll leaped 13 feet, 9.5 inches (4.20 meters).
Carroll was 13th in the 100-meter dash (13.67 seconds) and 200-meter dash (28.25) while Hardin was 18th (14.21) and 23rd (29.44) in the same events.
Junior Lane Peters (Phoenix, Ariz.) finished 13th in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 1:09.93 just in front of senior Katie Giles (Gaithersburg, Md.), who finished 14th overall (1:10.88). Peters was seventh in the 400-meter hurdles (1:14.44) and Giles took 19th place in the 800-meter run (2:53.58). Junior Rachel Young (Leesburg, Va.) had a strong 10,000-meter run as she finished seventh overall in 48:48.05.
GU finished 14th overall in both final team standings. Messiah swept the team championships, handily, as both Falcon teams won by at least 76 points.
The Bison will next head south to Newport News, Va., to participate in the New Captains Classic/Combined Events hosted by Christopher Newport University on April 18-19.
