Gallaudet faces tough competition at George Mason Last Chance Indoor Meet, set personal records

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Gallaudet University men's track and field team had several individuals set personal best marks Sunday at George Mason University's Last Chance Indoor Meet. The Bison went up against Division I, II and III programs and several post collegiate unattached athletes.

Senior Darius Flowers (Birmingham, Ala.) set a personal record for the indoor triple jump when his first jump was marked down at 14.25 meters (46 feet, nine inches). He finished sixth overall in the competition behind Samyr Laine who cleared 16 meters in three of his jumps and posted a winning mark of 16.60 meters (54 feet, 5.5 inches). Laine represented Haiti at the 2012 London Olympics where he placed 11th overall in the final round of men's triple jump.

Sophomore Michael Haynes (Edwardsville, Ill.) finished fourth in his heat in the 60-meter hurdles and set a personal best time of 8.93 records. He also finished 26th overall in the 200-meter dash (25 seconds).

Freshman Alex Close (Tallahassee, Fla.) was 10th in the 400-meter dash with a personal record time of 53 seconds.

Gallaudet's 4x400 relay team of Close, Haynes, sophomore Vianney Boum Yamb (Silver Spring, Md.) and Flowers finished third behind Virginia State and Howard University as Flowers crossed the finish line in 3:36.75.

Boum Yamb finished 24th in the 200-meter dash (24.20 seconds) and finished in the same spot in the 60-meter dash preliminaries (7.41 seconds). Freshman Ivan Alfaro (Yakima, Wash.) was 19th in the 3,000-meter run as he finished in 10:16.03.

Gallaudet's outdoor track and field season begins on Saturday, March 2, in Salisbury, Md., at the Lloyd Sigler Spring Meet.
