TOWSON, Md. – Sophomore jumper Darius Flowers (Birmingham, Ala.) won the triple jump on Saturday at the Goucher College Classic in Towson, Md., as the Gallaudet University men’s track and field team competed against nine other schools. Flowers earned 10 of Gallaudet’s 17 points as the Bison placed 10th overall out of 10 schools.
Flowers jumped 13.27 meters to win the triple jump. Gallaudet, who had been off for three weeks, also earned points in the two men’s relays. Flowers had a hand in those relays as he ran the second leg of the 4x100 meter relay and the anchor leg of the 4x400 meter relay.
In the 4x100 relay the Bison finished fourth with a time of 46.72 seconds to earn five team points. Sophomores Shawn Gordon-Davis and Kelvin Lunn (Cincinnati, Ohio) along with freshman Ryan Brubaker (Baltimore, Md.) joined Flowers. The same four runners ran in the 4x400 relay where they finished 8th with a time of 3:45.02 to receive two additional team points.
Gordon-Davis finished 11th in the 200 meter dash (24.11 seconds) while Lunn was 12th in the 400 meter dash (55.29). Freshman Matthew Williams was 11th in the long jump as he jumped 4.63 meters.
In the throwing events, sophomore Shelby Bean (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Jamie Groff (Jacksonville, Fla.) participated in the shot put and discus. Groff was 18th in the shot put (9.28 meters) and 27th in the discus (21.13 meters) while Bean was 23rd (9.04 meters) and 18th (27.95 meters), respectively.
The Bison will next travel to York, Pa., to participate in the Green and White Invitational hosted by York (Pa.) College on Saturday, April 2.
