BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Gallaudet University sophomore jumper Darius Flowers (Birmingham, Ala.) finished second in the triple jump at the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday at the Timothy Breidegam Track and Rocco Calvo Field on the campus of Moravian College. The triple jump was moved from Thursday evening until Friday morning due to inclement weather in the area for the past two days.
Flowers jumped 14.52 meters to earn eight team points as he finished behind Kevin Coyle from Springfield (Mass.) College who won the event with a leap of 14.98 meters. Coyle’s jump automatically qualified him for the NCAA Division III outdoor track and field championships that will be held May 26-28 in Delaware, Ohio. Flowers is still in the Top 12 in the triple jump with a season best jump of 14.60 meters set on May 5 at the Liberty Twilight Qualifier. The official NCAA championship field will be revealed next week.
This is the second meet in a row that Flowers has not won the triple jump as he has gone up against tougher competition from the East Coast. He previous won the triple jump in the first six meets of the season.
The 2011 ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships features 70 ECAC institutions and 140 teams. Flowers was the lone representative from the Gallaudet men’s and women’s track and field teams.
