CARLISLE, Pa. - The Gallaudet University men's track and field team traveled to Carlisle, Pa., on Saturday to run in final indoor meet for the Bison this season at the DuCharme Invitational on the campus of Dickinson College.
Gallaudet placed in eight different events out of 19 and earned ten team points to finish tied for 13th overall out of 17 schools present. The host Red Devils from Dickinson College won the invitational with 137 points, followed by Elizabethtown College (84.5 points) and Gettysburg College (75) round out the top three spots. GU was one of two Capital Athletic Conference teams present as Hood College placed 5th overall with 41 points.
Sophomore Braden Painter won the 55-meter hurdles with a blazing time of 8.33 seconds. Painter finished 19th overall in the 400-meter dash as he crossed the finish line in just over a minute, 1:00.74. Dickinson runner Sean Denson won the 400-meter dash in 51.21 seconds.
Freshman Mike Atwood (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished 10th in the 300-meter dash (43.73 seconds) just six seconds behind the first-place time of 37.71 set by Elizabethtown. The Bison 4x200 meter relay team was also 10th, out of 13 teams, with a time of 1:42.19. GU finished ahead of Alvernia University (1:49.49) and just behind Thaddeus Stevens College (1:41.34). Dickinson won the event in 1:34.73.
Long distance runner Richard Camacho (Medford, Ore.) placed in two different events. The freshman finished 38th in the mile run (6:02.02) and 44th in the 800-meter run (2:37.18).
A group of Bison runners ran in the 200-meter dash led by sophomore Phillip Hayes (Baton Rouge, La.) as he finished 25th out of 52 runners in 25.20 seconds. Will Evans from Goucher College won the event in 24.15 seconds. The three other Bison to compete in the event included Shelby Bean (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Kelvin Lunn and Atwood. Bean placed 30th (25.58 seconds), Lunn was seven spots back at 37th (26.02) and Atwood was 42nd (26.89).
Gallaudet only participated in one field event as freshman Kevin Allen (Houston, Texas) finished 30th in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 8.5 inches (9.66m).
Gallaudet will next begin its outdoor schedule on Saturday, March 6, in Salisbury, Md., as the Bison participate in the Salisbury University Spring Classic.
