Bison men's team finishes second at NEAC championships, sweep Swimmer and Rookie of the Year honors

CAZENOVIA, N.Y. - The Gallaudet University men's swimming and diving team finished second at the 2017 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championships here Sunday night at the Schneeweiss Athletic Complex on the campus of Cazenovia College. The third and final day of the conference championships came to a close but not before the Bison left with some hardware.

This is the highest the Bison have finished in three years. Gallaudet has won the NEAC title three times (2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14).

Junior Jonathan Tikhonoff (Folsom, Calif.) was named the 2017 NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Year while freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) took home 2017 NEAC Men's Rookie of the Year honors. This is only the second time in conference history that the same school earned both honors at the same championship. Gallaudet last won the NEAC Men's Swimmer of the Year five years ago when Brian Bennett took home his second consecutive honor (2010-11, 2011-12). Martinez becomes the first Bison to win the NEAC Men's Rookie of the Year.

Gallaudet accumulated 384 team points but the Bison were not deep enough to compete with SUNY Cobleskill, who swam away from the competition with 621 points. This is the Fighting Tigers' second conference title in the past three years.

Martinez set a new NEAC record in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of two minutes, 20.21 seconds, which was nearly 10 seconds faster then the second-place finisher. His time was over two seconds faster then his school record mark of 2:22.47 set on Nov. 5, 2016.

Martinez completed his first NEAC championships with three individual first-place finishes, which included two NEAC records, and four second-place finishes as a member of the Bison relay teams.

Tikhonoff finished first in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:09.61 as he finished over seven seconds faster then the second-place finisher. Tikhonoff conclude the championships with three first-place finishes, one NEAC record and four second-place finishes as a member of GU's relays.

Freshman Setthawut Snow (St. Augustine, Fla.) placed fourth in the 100 freestyle as he touched the wall in 58.66 seconds. Senior David Bruno (Patchogue, N.Y.) finished fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (25:41.79).

Gallaudet's 400 freestyle relay team of Tikhonoff, Snow, senior Dary Berke (Fremont, Calif.) and Martinez finished second in 3:42.76.
