Gallaudet earns two top NEAC Men's Swimming and Diving honors, six Bison land on all-conference teams

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. - The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) released its 2017 All-Conference Swimming and Diving teams and Gallaudet University earned 10 spots, which included four relay events. Six different Bison men's swimmers earned all-conference honors including 2016-17 Men's Swimming and Diving Swimmer of the Year and Rookie of the Year.

A swimmer or diver needs to place first, second, or third in an event at the NEAC championships to earn all-confernce status. The 2017 swimming and diving championships were held Feb. 10-12 and were hosted by Cazenovia College. This year Gallaudet finished in second place.

Gallaudet had two swimmers earn All-Conference First Team honors in three individual events. Junior Jonathan Tikhonoff (Folsom, Calif.) was named to the All-NEAC First Team in the 200-yard backstroke, 400 Individual Medley (IM) and 500 freestyle. Tikhonoff was selected as the 2016-17 NEAC Men's Swimming and Diving Swimmer of the Year for his performance.

Freshman Chris Martinez (El Paso, Texas) was named to the All-NEAC First Team in the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and 200 IM. Martinez set new conference records in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.21) and 200 IM (2:06.73). He was selected as the 2016-17 NEAC Men's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Year for his performance.

Tikhonoff, Martinez and several other teammates were honored four more times with All-NEAC second team honors for their performances in various relay events

GU's 200 and 400 medley relay teams, made up of Martinez, Tikhonoff, senior Dary Berke (Fremont, Calif.) and freshman Setthawut Snow (St. Augustine, Fla.) were two of the four All-NEAC second team selections.

The Bison 400 medley relay team consisted of Martinez, Tikhonoff, Snow and senior Xuan Lin (Mount Prospect, Ill.).

Martinez, Tikhonoff, Snow and senior David Bruno (Patchogue, N.Y.) comprised Gallaudet's 800 freestyle relay team.

SUNY Cobleskill swam away with the championship this year as it accumulated 621 points. The Bison were the next closest with 384 points. Cazenovia College's Bill Houser was selected as 2016-17 NEAC Men's Swimming and Diving Coach of the Year.
