GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced its student-athlete of the week awards for Jan. 23, and Gallaudet University senior guard Tony Tatum (Gardendale, Ala.) was named NEAC Men's Basketball Student-Athlete of the Week.
Through two games last week, Tatum averaged 15 points, 12.5 rebounds, five assists and three steals per contest while shooting 57 percent from the field (12-for-21) and 75 percent from the free throw line (6-for-8).
His highlight of the week came in the Bison 87-67 victory over SUNY Cobleskill last Saturday. He went 8-for-12 from the field and 2-for-3 from the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 18 points along with eight boards, five assists and four steals in just 29 minutes of action. Tatum was equally impressive against Penn St.-Harrisburg, the NEAC South Division leaders, as he scored 12 points and grabbed a season and career-high 17 rebounds, five assists and two steals in a last second 70-69 loss last Wednesday night at the Field House. The double-double was the first of the season for Tatum.
This is the second NEAC award for the team this season, and the first for Tatum. Senior guard Brandon McMillan (Frederick, Md.) was named NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week for Nov. 23, 2011. Tatum was previously named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 22, 2008, prior to Gallaudet joining the NEAC last season.
The Bison will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28, when they travel to Pennsylvania to play conference foe Penn St.-Abington at 2 p.m.
