SOMERVILLE, Mass. - As we head into the "Dog Days of Summer" it is never too early to begin to think about the fall months and another Gallaudet University football season. To get the ball rolling Noontime Sports, a New England Division III sports blog, released its 2017 Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Players to Watch list on Wednesday.
While the list is not comprehensive, absent are offensive linemen and special teams, the list provides some fodder for the upcoming ECFC season. All eight teams had at least one selection on offense and defense.
Gallaudet had seven selections, the most of any ECFC team, with three players on offense and four on defense. Rising sophomore quarterback Timel Benton (Columbia, S.C.) and junior wide receivers Dylan Mento (Hammonton, N.J.) and Lawrence Watson (Fayetteville, N.C.) were picked on offense. Benton was one of two ECFC quarterbacks selected. On defense, rising junior defensive end Solomon Worthey (San Diego, Calif.), linebacker Mason Gooch (Mount Sterling, Ky.) and defensive backs Louie Akuffo (Bowie, Md.) and Jamie Cumberbatch (Waldorf, Md.) were selected.
Gallaudet begins the 2017 season on the road at Shenandoah University on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m.
