Davis Named Defensive Coordinator
Washington D.C-- Gallaudet University Head Football Coach Edward Hottle has announced that secondary coach John Davis will now carry the title of Defensive Coordinator. Davis was a part of the defensive staff that saw the Bison defense force 26 turnovers in 2008.
"It's an honor to continue my career at such a special place," said Coach Davis. "Our goals won't change, we'll continue to play stout run defense and make teams earn every inch."
"I learned a lot from Coach Hottle last season, I just want to keep the momentum we played with last season and continue to be aggressive and get after teams. These are exciting times at Gallaudet"
Under Davis's guidance the secondary became more involved in run support and more disciplined in pass coverage. The secondary finished with 12 interceptions, 15 breakups and 2 forced fumbles. Davis's tuteledge helped defensive back Jared Vollmar to a #16 national ranking in solo tackles (56 total 6.02 per game).
In December Coach Davis was selected by the NCAA to participate in the Future Coaches Academy in Nashville, Tenn. He was one of only 30 young coaches in the country to be selected for attendance.
"He's a good young coach who understands our defense and how to put our guys in position to be competitive week in and week out," said Coach Hottle. "He's proven that he has a good football mind, he's ready for this challenge and I'm excited to give him this opportunity."
Gallaudet will open the 2009 season with a home game against U.S. Merchant Marine on September 1, 2009 with a 1:00pm kickoff time.
