2009 Captain's Profile: Marty Blomquist

Rising senior defensive back Marty Blomquist has been named a team captain for the 2009-2010 football season. Blomquist is a returning three year starter for the Bison Defense and his work ethic and dedication are a true testament to where the Bison Program is headed

"I remember when (Marty's) mom dropped him off here for his first day of practice," recalls Bison Coach Ed Hottle. "He looked like he wanted to cry I didn't know if he would make it. Now he does everything we ask him to do and he leads our team on Saturday's."

Marty brings a ferocious attitude to the secondary and nearly played every snap of the 2008 season. He finished the 2008 season at his corner position with 44 tackles (23 solo), 3 INT, and a team leading eight passes defended.

Blomquist was also a team captain at Point Pleasant Borough High School in NJ. Blomquist was featured in an article in Deaf Today about how strong of a leader he was as the only deaf player on the team.

"It's all about his work ethic and determination," said Coach Calvin Thompson who coached Marty in High School. "He may be playing against a kid who's more talented but he'll out work him. He's willing to do whatever it takes and that type of selflessness is what I appreciate as a coach."

Lead by example is an old cliche that Marty has taken to heart. As Marty leads, the Bison follow.  His strong commitment to the Bison program has paid off immensely for Blomquist. When he arrived at Gallaudet University he was a shade over 5'8 and weighed a measly 146 lbs. Now the senior has filled out to a chiseled 5'10 180 lb body. Up close and personal with Marty Blomquist....
