FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Gallaudet University baseball team wrapped up its Florida Spring Break trip here Friday as they lost 11-6 to Old Westbury College.
The Bison (5-10) struggled at the plate early on in the game and found themselves in a 10-0 hole as they went to the bottom of the fifth inning.
GU was finally able to get on the scoreboard when freshman Frank Diaz (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) singled to left-center field to bring home sophomore Gilwon Seo (Hongseong, South Korea) in the bottom of the fifth inning.
After holding the Panthers to no runs in the top of the sixth, the Bison headed to the plate with some momentum. They were able to capitalize off of their momentum as Diaz and Seo each singled to knock in runs for the Bison.
Before the inning was over junior outfielder Kyle Gumm (Dallas, Texas) scored on a wild pitch to cut the Panthers lead in half, 10-5.
The Panthers (6-4) responded in the seventh with one additional run to take a six-run lead, 11-5.
Gallaudet scored once more in the eighth but was unable mount a comeback as they fell to the Panthers.
- Seo went 2-for-5 from the plate and scored two runs for the Bison
- Junior pitcher Michael Ehlers (Tinley Park, Ill.) pitched five innings and recorded five strikeouts
- Senior Zack Crawford (Newnan, Ga.) batted 2-for-4 and was walked once, scored one run
The Bison will return north and will head to Chestertown, Md., to take on Washington College in a non-conference game on Wednesday, March 22, at 3:30 p.m.
