A new chapter starts for the GU baseball program as Bison take to new Hoy Field

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A new era began for the Gallaudet University baseball program Tuesday afternoon in the nation's capital as the Bison played its first games on the newly built Hoy Field. GU hosted St. Mary's (Md.) College in a non-conference doubleheader before a nice crowd of over 100 people gathered to see the new field and cheer on the Bison. The two teams split the doubleheader as the visiting Seahawks won the first game 10-3 but Gallaudet bounced back with an 11-8 win in the second game.

Gallaudet (14-15) scored at least a run in the first five innings in the second game as the Bison led 3-0 after the first inning and increased its lead to 8-4 after three innings and 11-5 after five. The Seahawks (15-17) added three runs in the top of the seventh, the last and final inning in a standard doubleheader. Senior pitcher William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) came on to pick-up his first save of the season to secure the win for the buff and blue.

Freshman pitcher Brandon Holsworth (Beal City, Mich.) picked up the win as he came in out of the bullpen in the second inning to relieve Layton Seeber (Champaign, Ill.) who started the second game. Holsworth pitched 2.1 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits, walked one and struck out three Seahawks.

Sophomore William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) blasted the first Gallaudet home run, a solo shot, to lead-off the fifth inning to increase GU's lead to six runs. Bissell finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Junior shortstop Tommy Barksdale (Brookeville, Md.) drew four consecutive walks from the lead-off spot to help set the table for the Bison. Chapman knocked in three runs, two off a second inning double.

There were a lot of firsts recorded on Tuesday at the new field as St. Mary's outfielder John Stewart was the first batter in the first game as Gallaudet starting pitcher Ryan Hastings (Cherry Valley, Mass.) threw the first pitch. Seahawk shortstop Corey Napier had the first-ever hit at the new field, a single to left field, and later scored on the first extra-base hit by Keith Johnson, a double to right field. Johnson had a day at the plate as he went 7-for-8 in the two games and scored five runs, hit three doubles, drove in five RBI and hit the first-ever home run at the new field. The Seahawk third baseman slammed a three-run home run to left field in the fifth inning of the first game.

St. Mary's starting pitcher Mike Victory (5-4) lived up to his last name and recorded the first win at the new Hoy Field as he threw a complete game and allowed three runs on six hits, walked none and struck out six Bison.

Hastings got knocked out of the second inning after giving up three runs in the first inning and two in the second. He lasted 1.1 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out one.

The first Gallaudet hit and run at the new Hoy Field were recorded by Barksdale in the bottom of the first inning of the first game.

GU will hit the road this weekend for two conference doubleheaders against Cazenovia College on Saturday, April 14, and Keuka College on Sunday, April 15.
