KEUKA PARK, N.Y. – This time it only took one season for the Gallaudet University baseball team to set a new school record for wins in a season with 18 after last year's team broke a 112-year-old program record with 17 wins in a season. Gallaudet reached the new mark as it swept Keuka College 5-3, 8-3, on the road Sunday in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader at Kuhl Field.
Gallaudet (18-15, 6-4 NEAC West Division) scored early and often in both games as the Bison scored three runs in the second inning and two in the third in the first game to take a 5-0 lead. Keuka (2-14, 2-6 NEAC West) answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Tyler Crace (Westfield, Ind.) came in to pick-up his second save in as many days as GU took the first game.
Sophomore Chris Guinn (McLoud, Okla.) started his first game of the season and went six strong innings as he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, walked none and struck out five. Guinn even helped his own cause at the plate as he batted 2-for-4, which included a two-run home run in the three-run second inning.
Sophomore catcher Casey Hicks (Henderson, Nev.) added two hits, two runs, two stolen bases and a RBI in the win. Fellow sophomore William Bissell (Brewer, Maine) added a triple and freshman Mitchell Bensman (Russia, Ohio) had two hits.
In the second game, Gallaudet jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and added four runs in the second as the Bison led 7-1.
The six-run lead helped senior William Chapman (Los Angeles, Calif.) on the mound as he pitched five innings where he allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out two. He also knocked in three runs and scored once to lead the Bison offense.
GU returns home to play its final regular-season home games at Hoy Field on Wednesday, April 18, when the Bison welcome Penn St.-Harrisburg (9-23, 3-5 NEAC West) to town for two conference games at 1 p.m.
