WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) for November. Swimming senior Brian Bennet (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and volleyball freshman Kali Frowick (Norfolk, Neb.) were this month’s selections for their outstanding performance as Bison student-athletes.
Bennett had outstanding performances in both of the two meets this month for the Bison. In the first, a conference meet against SUNY Cobleskill at the Field House, he won the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.72) and 500-yard freestyle (5:05.19), and was a member of the first-place 200-yard medley relay team en route to a Bison win.
The second meet of the month was a record-breaking day for Bennett. He broke three GU program records as the Bison men’s swimming team competed in a double dual meet against Goucher College and Arcadia University. Bennett finished first in the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events to get things started. He finished the 200 free event in 1:48.43 while he touched the wall first in the 500 free at 4:55.34. In the final event of the meet, Bennett swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay where he put the Bison out in front with a blazing time of 50.46 seconds to break the 100-yard freestyle record. Bennett was named North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Men’s Swimming Student-Athlete of the Week on Nov. 21 for his performance there.
“Brian and his work ethic are very deserving of this award, which we recognize as a stepping stone to more personal best times, more University team records and more opportunities to show the country that he can compete at any level,” said Gallaudet swimming coach Bill Snape.
Frowick, the 2011 NEAC Rookie of the Year and All-NEAC first team performer, played well in three November postseason matches. The middle hitter was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the NEAC tournament after she led the Bison with 31 kills and 25 digs in the two wins. In the championship, the Bison won a five-set thriller against regular-season champion Penn St.-Berks, for their second conference title in a row.
She also led the team with 11 kills in their first round NCAA tournament match, and added 13 digs. She was a major contributor to the Bison offense that ranked 15th nationally in hitting percentage and 19th in service aces.
“It is my pleasure to congratulate Kali for being selected as the November Bison of the Month,” said Gallaudet volleyball coach Lynn Ray Boren. “Her positive attitude and effort helped us secure our second NEAC championship in a row and a return trip to the NCAA tournament. I am looking forward to coaching Kali for the next three years along with a strong supporting group of first-year players.”
This is the third Bison of the Month Award for the 2011-12 season. December’s Bison of the Month will be released in early January.
