WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients for the Bison of the Month award presented by Gallaudet Interpreting Service (GIS) for December. Swimming junior DJ Everton-Lovell (Norfolk, Va.) and women's basketball freshman Elena Ciccarelli (Whitesboro, N.Y.) were this month’s selections for their outstanding performance as Bison student-athletes.
Everton-Lovell had a break out December as he helped the Bison to a 2-1 record to help clinch the first winning team record since 1965. The Norfolk, Va., native secured three individual first-place finishes on Dec. 3, against North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) foe Wells College as the Bison won 155-117. He finished first in the 200-yard butterfly (2:28.36), 200-yard backstroke (2:09.52) and the 400-yard IM (5:03.45). Everton-Lovell was also a member of the 200-yeard medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:49.88. A week later in York, Pa., Everton-Lovell helped the Bison split their double dual meet with a win over Penn St.-Altoona and a setback against the host Spartans from York (Pa.) College. Everton-Lovell placed first in the 100-yard backstroke (58.31 seconds) and fourth in the 200-yard IM (2:16.42). Gallaudet’s 400 freestyle relay team (3:42.68) secured first-place points as York’s teams swam as exhibition during the final two events.
“DJ has been a leader in action and deeds thus far this year. Day-in, day-out he comes to practice prepared and ready to work,” said Gallaudet swimming coach Bill Snape. “The results speak for themselves as he has numerous first-place individual finishes, some personal best times and co-captain of the men's team that has secured their first winning record in 46 years. We are all looking forward to some great things at the NEAC championships in February.”
December proved to be a coming out party for Ciccarelli as the Bison posted a 2-2 record. In four games she totaled 57 points, 40 rebounds, four assists, two steals and one block. She recorded her first collegiate double-double when she scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against Lancaster Bible College on Dec. 1. That began a string of three straight games with a double-double. She scored a career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds on Dec. 3 on the road against Trinity (D.C.). University. The Whitesboro, N.Y., native continued her hot streak on Dec. 5 in a road victory against Christendom she tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds. In five days she had 49 points and 31 rebounds. Her double-double streak came to an end on Dec. 11 at home against Penn St.-Berks as she netted eight points and brought down nine boards.
“Elena is a coach’s dream! She excels in the classroom and on the hardwood with a rare combination of natural ability, tenacity and humility. She is always willing to put in the work necessary to improve and sacrifice individual accolades for team success,” said Gallaudet women’s basketball coach Brendan Stern.
This is the fourth Bison of the Month Award for the 2011-12 season. January's Bison of the Month will be released in February.
