Johnson selected Bison of the Month for a second time this year, Bennett honored for month of November
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the two recipients of the Bison of the Month recently for the month of November. For the first time this season we have our first repeat honoree as volleyball junior Paige Johnson (North Richland Hills, Texas) was selected a second time as she is joined by men's swimming senior Brian Bennett (Colorado Springs, Colo.).
Johnson only saw action in three matches during the month of November but she played a key role in helping Gallaudet win its first-ever North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) championship in any sport in the first season of membership for the Bison in the conference. The junior setter was named the NEAC volleyball tournament Most Valuable Player as she helped the Buff and Blue win the conference title. She helped to lead GU over SUNYIT in the semifinals and then over Keuka in the final with 3-1 victories. She finished the two-match tournament with 77 assists, 23 digs, seven blocks and five service aces. The conference title gave Gallaudet the automatic berth into the 2010 NCAA volleyball tournament. Gallaudet was sent to Newport News, Va., to face nationally ranked Christopher Newport University in the first round. This NCAA appearance was the seventh in program history and the first since 2006. In the first round loss to CNU, Johnson notched her 13th double-double with 18 assists and 11 digs. She earned Bison of the Month honors back in September of this year.
Bennett helped to set the tone for the 2010-11 season for the Gallaudet men’s swimming program as he earned NEAC Student-Athlete of the Week honors on November 1. He led the Bison to two victories in three meets as Gallaudet posted a 2-2 record in the first three weeks of the season. Bennett won three freestyle events against Frostburg State University in the first meet of the season. In a double dual meet against St. Mary’s (Md.) College and Goucher College, Bennett was second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:49.30) just behind St. Mary’s swimmer Cameron Hedquist, who was a second faster. Bennett also placed second in the 500-yard freestyle where he finished with a time of 5:02.38. The following week he won the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:49.05), 200 freestyle (1:53.23) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.45) against NEAC foe SUNYIT at home.
The December Bison Athletes of the Month will be announced in early January.
