WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients of the Bison of the Month for February and both are first-time winners this season. Men’s basketball junior Brandon McMillan (Frederick, Md.) and women’s swimming senior Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, Ind.) were selected for their play on the basketball court and in the pool.
McMillan started all eight games for the Bison in the month of February as the Buff and Blue posted a 5-3 record and locked up the fourth seed in the North Eastern Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament. The junior guard led the team in February with a scoring average of 13.6 points per game as he reached double figures in six of the eight games. He had a double-double in the NEAC semifinal loss to Penn St.-Harrisburg where he scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. For the month he tallied 109 points, grabbed 33 rebounds, passed out 25 assists, shot 50 percent from the field, 65 percent from the free-throw line and 33 percent from the 3-point range.
“Brandon had a great stretch run for us as he came through with some big shots in pivotal conference games that helped us prepare for the NEAC tournament,” said Gallaudet men’s basketball coach Jeb Barber. “Brandon demonstrated great leadership on and off the court. We hope he can continue where he left off as we head into next season.”
Robinson won six events at the 2011 NEAC women’s swimming and diving championships held from February 18-20 at the Bouck Hall Natatorium on the campus of SUNY Cobleskill. The senior leader’s efforts helped the Bison win the conference championship. The championship is only the third overall in Gallaudet’s women’s swimming program history and the first since 1986 when the Bison repeated as Chesapeake League champions. Robinson was named the 2011 NEAC Women’s Swimmer of the Year.
“Leading her team to the NEAC Championship and garnering NEAC Swimmer of the Year are fitting tributes to the leader of perhaps the best Gallaudet women’s senior class in history,” said Gallaudet swim coach Bill Snape, who swept NEAC Coach of the Year honors for men’s and women’s swimming this season.
“While the senior co-captain is renowned for her powerful butterfly, in which she holds two team records, her victorious come-from-behind anchor leg on the 400 free relay at championships – the last event of her collegiate career - displayed her guts and talents in one fell swoop. In my eyes, she enters the very elite realm of all-time Gallaudet swimming greats.”
The March Bison Athletes of the Month will be announced in early April.
