Darius Flowers, Leslye Kang named April Bison of the Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department recently announced the two recipients of the Bison of the Month for April and both are first-time winners this season and hail from the track and field programs. Sophomore Darius Flowers (Birmingham, Ala.) and freshman Leslye Kang (Wayne, N.J.) were selected for their outstanding performance with the Bison men’s and women’s track and field programs.

Flowers dominated the triple jump during the month of April, much like he had done for the entire track and field season. The sophomore won the triple jump event at the Mason-Dixon Conference outdoor championships as he made a career best jump of 14.56 meters. He earned all-conference honors for his performance as he won the triple jump for the sixth straight meet for the Bison. His mark met the NCAA Division III provisional mark that qualified him for the national championships in late May. Flowers fell .75 inches shy of tying the school record in the triple jump of 47-10 held by Ken Myers, who set that mark in 2003. In addition to his triple jump ability he also participated in several relays at the Mason-Dixon championships and throughout the season. Flowers won the triple jump at the Green and White Invitational on April 2 with a jump of 13.91 meters and subsequently at the following meets during the month of April; Millersville Metrics on April 9 (13.88 meters) and Johns Hopkins-Loyola Invitational on April 16 (13.15 meters).

Kang crushed the school record in the javelin at this year’s Mason-Dixon Conference outdoor championships where she made a toss of 37.81 meters (124 feet) to win the event. The freshman earned all-conference honors for her performance. The previous program mark was 119 feet held by Heather Lightfoot set back on April 10, 1999. At the Johns Hopkins-Loyola Invitational on April 16, Kang ran through the rain to finish ninth overall in the 100-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 14.77 seconds. On April 9, Kang was the top Bison to finish in the javelin at the Millersville Metrics with a toss of 34.26 meters.

This is the last Bison of the Month awards for the 2010-11 season. In total 13 different student-athletes were honored throughout the season, from September-April, including three who were repeat recipients. All 12 varsity athletic programs were represented during the eight month period.
