WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Gallaudet University Athletics Department announced the first two recipients of the Bison of the Month recently for the month of September. The honorees are Joshua Doudt (Medina, Ohio) from football and Kara Gulvas (Crown Point, Ind.) from women's soccer.
Doudt made four starts for the Bison during the month of September as Gallaudet posted a 2-2 record, including a 1-1 record in the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC). Doudt made 22 unassisted tackles, six assisted tackles for a total of 28 tackles in four games. He made a season-high 10 tackles in a 23-6 loss to Mount Ida College. The following week, Doudt returned a fumble 68 yards for a key touchdown as GU went on to beat Castleton State College, 49-18, on the road to give the Bison their first-ever ECFC victory. In the first month of competition, Doudt has played a variety of positions for the Bison as he has seen time at full back, offensive tackle, linebacker, nose guard and even returned a kick-off.
"Josh is a jack of all trades for us. He has no problem playing different positions. He is a true team player and leader," said GU coach Ed Hottle. "We expect more big games from Josh this season."
Gulvas started all nine games during the month of September where she posted a 3-5-1 record for the Buff and Blue. Gulvas made 98 saves (.772 save percentage) in nearly 700 minutes of action. In her three wins, she recorded shutouts. The highlight of the month was the back-to-back wins the Bison had over Patrick Henry and Christendom, which ended a week where GU went 2-0-1. Gulvas made an early career-high 19 saves against University of Mary Washington on September 27. She has since increased that mark to 23 saves in a loss to Wesley College on October 1.
"Kara is a key player on this team. She keep us in games and has grown a lot in the first month of competition," said GU coach Sarah Gumina. "I look forward to the remainder of the season and the next three years of coaching Kara while here at Gallaudet."
The October Bison of the Month will be announced during the first week of November.
